Architects Plans

Architects Plans

Postby Margaret Freestone on Sun Jun 17, 2007 2:20 am

We need to have plans drawn up for our farmhouse and barn in the Limousin and intend to use a British architect. However, we would like to show our architect some example plans that have been drawn up by a French architect so that a similar format can be followed/the same French terminology can be used. Can anyone help please?

There can be many reasons for wanting to use an English Architect but in my opinion the advantages of using a French architect far outweigh any benefits you might get from using an English one.
Whether it be a second home or primary residence I would demonstrate your first commitment to your new community by using local French professionals and artisans.
The problem with trying to use old plans as a guide is that every area has different rules and finding out what is acceptable and what is not just by trial and error can be time consuming and expensive whereas a local architect will know not only all the local regulation quirks and requirements but probably the officials too, which all makes things go more smoothly.

Hi Margaret. I am a UK Trained Architect, now living and working in Poitou-Charente. If you want to contact me direct, perhaps we can discuss your enquiry in more detail.
Kind Regards

I got quotes from English architects working in France(Not including Mr West) and also from a local French architect living in the same commune and only 10 minutes away.

As well as knowing the Maire personally plus the local regulations and tradesmen, his quote was 60% cheaper than the next best English one.

No contest really.

David , Im glad that you managed to source a local French Architect at a realistic price. I am surprised to hear you say that the English Architects you approached were quoting fees of almost double his !! From my personal experiences, I can honestly say that the UK Architects in our region are very cost competitive and often also have a good personal knowledge of local Maires as well . ... and certainly you didnt approach me !!! Good Luck with your project, Let us know how you get on.
