Taxe d'habitation increase

Taxe d'habitation increase

Postby Tim Masters on Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:46 pm

We've recently had our demand for taxe d'habitation for 2009. It has increased by 65per cent since last year. Have I missed something? It's a massive increase. Is it happening all across France?

My friend had a similar increase when his property reached a certain age - less tax is payable on younger properties, I believe.

Hi Tim,

There has either been a revision of the rateable value of your property, or there has been an error. You need to talk to your local mairie and then potentially your local tax office.

You have the right to challenge the assessment. You can read more about such a process at:

http://www.french-property.com/guides/france/finance-taxation/taxation/tax-inspection/tax-claims/

Local rates rises across the country last year were quite modest. You can read more in a Newsletter article we published.

http://www.french-property.com/newsletter/2008/10/15/local-property-rates-france/

There is a link in the article to a piece in the magazine 'Capital' that gives you the rate rises for all communes in the country.

Thanks Ed. I've looked at the link and have written a letter to the local tax office. Nothing's changed in or on the house so we can't understand why there's been a big hike. Hopefully it's a mistake.

What reductions are available for tax d'habitation and/or Tax Foncier for
French tax payers on low income and over 65 years i.e. below the Impot sur le Revenu tax payable level and how can these be claimed ?

Hi
I,m new to this website and I have just received my first Tax Habitacion bill for my apartment in Nice (the first 2 years are tax-free apparently). Can anyone tell me exactly what this tax is (I think the last one I paid was their equivalent of rates). It was 760 Euro and the Tax Habitacion is 1360 Euro. Quite a bit more than 107!? I would appreciate your feedback.
Thanks
Beverley
